‘Les Grottes de Gargas’ are the only ornate caves in the Hautes Pyrénées open to the public. The caves are located in the valley of Neste in the municipality of Aventignan. Classified as historical monuments in 1910, the Gargas caves have revealed many archaeological treasures (fireplaces, tools, tracks of hunting, etc.) and crafts (ornaments, pigments, etc.). But the most blatant testimony of our prehistoric ancestors is expressed by the diversity and richness of the representations left on the walls. In Gargas, you can see engravings and animal paintings, geometric signs, sexual symbols, and especially prints of hands.
